I spawned 3 different groups of bettas together at the beginning of the year and combined them to the same growout tank. As a whole it has failed, but I do have a few lovely fry currently growing out together.
I wanted to spawn a few different bettas at once in order to have a variety of females for a sorority, as well as providing different colors to the local shops around me.
Individual Spawn Growth lead to a lot of fry getting eaten.
Difficulty maintaining enough BBS for 400 fry.
I went out of town and had someone else look after them, resulting in a 50% loss of fry.
Sometimes hard to tell which fry came from which spawn.
Kept the spawns separate for longer.
Separated the fry out into two tanks by size, not move them all together at once.
Run more then 2 BBS hatcheries at once, and found secondary methods of feeding
Planned my vacation around young fry.
1 Nem - Giant Nemo Koi HMPK
I imported this handsome dude from Dre Giant Betta in Indonesia. He is just stunning and has lovely purple scales. He is at least 6+CM Body only, just an absolute UNIT.
1 Arok Betta - Giant Nemo Koi HMPK
Arok Betta in San Antonio Loaned me this beautiful lady after the original gal I had picked for this male didn't work out! I am so greatful they were able to provide a lovely female for this dude cause he is so ready to be a dad!
2 Polk - Giant Yellow Polkadot HMPK
This guy is probably the worst betta I've ever tried to spawn. He was way too timid to want to spawn. It helped that Dottie is very aggressive for a female and literally forced him to spawn with her lol.
2 Dottie - Giant Yellow Polkadot HMPK
I saw Dottie for sale from a local giant betta seller and knew she was the one! She is so perfect! She is huge! She was an amazing partner for Polk and really stepped up to make this spawn happen.
3 Amethyst - Male Pink Dalmatian HM
Amethyst is by far my favorite betta I've spawned and is the betta in my logo. Even at 9 months old his pink has stayed true and beautiful. He lives with a friend now!
3 Pearl - Female Pink Dalmatian HM
Photos don't show how beautiful this gal is! In the sorority tank she shines blue with pink fins. I had a few pink females to choose from but I decided on Pearl because her pink was the lightest out of them all.
4 Waterlily - Giant Marble HMPK
Waterlily is from my very first spawn! (GYK07) He ended up being on the smaller side for the longest time, then one day around 7 months old decided to eat all his shrimp tankmates and grew to a normal Giant size! I love his vigorous nature and fun colors.
4 Pea - Rose Gold HMPK
I got her on a whim from my LFS. Her form is fantastic and she was a great partner for Waterlily.
Spawn 1 - Red Giant Koi Results
Hatched : 1-01-2022
Deformities : None, the fry who made it were lovely and stunning in form.
Colors : Red Koi, maybe others?
Goals : I wanted to create pretty red koi and was able to do that. Unfortunately most had terrible Swim Bladder Disorder issues. I had to euthanize all but 3. Two were still thriving as of 9/23, and the other passed away at 9 months old.
Continue : I had made the choice NOT to continue this spawn because of the SBD issues, but made a mistake when trying to figure out which bettas were from which spawns. I had assumed 06 was from the yellow koi, and gave her a spawn with 16. She passed away shortly after.
Spawn 2 - Yellow Giant Koi Results
Hatched : 1-01-2022
Deformities : A lot of awkward shaped bettas with bad form.
Colors : Yellow, Blue, Koi, Grizzle, and muddied multicolor
Goals : I was hoping to make gorgeous giant yellow koi bettas, with an emphasis on females with bright colors. While I did achieve some colorful girls, the majority of the spawn has terrible form and is not up to my standards.
Continue : Absolutely not. There are few fish I have loathed as much as the male from this pairing. He is so apathetic about breeding and his fry are the same way. Such lazy fish, but at least the females were really friendly and chill in the sororities ;-;
Spawn 3 - Pink Halfmoon Results
Hatched : 1-07-2022
Deformities : Slightly imperfect toplines on the males, but nothing too bad
Colors : Red, cello, fancy, some spots.
Goals : I was hoping to create more pink halfmoons like both parents, but it looks like the gene skipped this generation. I am unsure if it would have been better to pair back to their dad or to another light color betta.
Continue : I would have loved to continue this line, but I wanted to narrow down the amount of spawns I have and focus on others. I did not continue.
Spawn 3 - Pink Halfmoon Results
Hatched : 1-15-2022
Deformities : None
Colors : Blue, Yellow Koi
Goals : I wanted to experiement with adding in a solid yellow base betta to my tiger male to see if that would boost the amount of yellow coverage. It was a success, and created a stunning yellow betta with full iridescent mask and koi spots. The added bonus was that he never marbled to blue in the 3 years I had him!
Continue : I continued this spawn multiple times with Mango.
01 - Red Bi-color HM Female
This girl is SOOOO aggressive! I absolutely love her.
She was the first to be jarred. Her form is stunning too :)
02 - Cello HM Male
This guy is so cute! He reminds me of his father, but without the pink fins. He's started developing Dalmatian spots!
03 - Giant Yellow Koi Male
This guy is just like his father! He is gonna be big, colorful and just as lazy as his dad lol. He shows interest in the other males but never flares.
04 - Marble Plakat
This one is a bit of a mystery to me. I am certain they are a male, but they don't flare yet. They were solid blue 3 weeks ago but have started marbling.
05 - Marble Plakat
Just like 04, I think this is a male. Used to be solid blue but has started to take a yellow tone. He is very mellow.
06 - Giant Yellow Tiger Female
I love how thick this girl is! She is huge and has great form <3
07 - Red Bi HM Female
This girl is similar to 01, but nice! She is in the sorority and really shines as the only red one. I am hoping her fins get longer.
08 - Blue Plakat Female
One of the smaller girls in the sorority, she has a nice blue mask with a slight yellow undertone.
09 - Cello Giant Plakat Female
I think this girl is from the Giant Yellow Koi spawn. I am guessing she may develop yellow spots. She is a larger sorority girl!
10 - Blue Plakat Female
This girl has a light iridescent mask over a yellow base. She is on the medium size but I hope she grows with time!
11 - Cello HM Female
I think this girl is from my dal halfmoons, but she is HUGE! Time will tell :) I hope the bump on her head evens out too.
12 - Dark Blue Plakat Female
This girl has been very peaceful in the spawn. Her blue is a little darker then her sisters. I love her long fins!
13 - Yellow Plakat Female
This girl showed up out of no where in the pond! She is much smaller then the others so I've been feeding her separately. I can't wait to see her grow!
14 - Marble HM Female
This girl was black and grey during her first photoshoot. She is now cello! I'm excited to watch her marble and change :D
15 - Blue Plakat Male
The other tiny fry. I think he is a male. I have him separated out for special feeding and attention. He's catching up quickly in size!
16 - Fancy Yellow Plakat Male
By far my favorite from the group! He is also from the mini F1 giant spawn but just like his dad he did not get the giant size. He is my current pick for continuing the line!
17 - Udon
He went home early, the only successful male betta from the Red Koi spawn.
